    Essentials

We are moving quickly — we'll likely close on the lot at the end of this week, and we've already had a pre-design meeting with our architects. We'll have a standing meeting with them each week on Thursday, and we've already given them a short, basic list of our "must haves" for this place:

    • open floor plan on first floor, combining kitchen, dining and living rooms
    • radiant heating
    • designated space for an office
    • 2 1/2 bathrooms (1/2 bath on first floor)
    • three bedrooms: one master, two smaller
    • alley-access parking
    • lots of natural light
    • as green as we can afford to be

What are we missing? Or, what would be on your list?

Unfinished basement I could use for a roller rink.

Lots and Lots and Lots of wrought iron. Like EVERYWHERE.

    Also, chintz.

Are you going to have any solar panels? If the site makes it a productive option, I'd probably put them in.

While we would love to have them, solar panels are such a big upfront expense that our very limited budget probably wouldn't allow it. Even if we could afford them, I'm not sure that we would be in the house enough years to break even on them, which isn't the only reason to do them, but I'm kind of a miser.

I understand. I keep hearing that cheaper solar power is on the way for consumers, hopefully that is sooner rather than later!
